Publication protocol

At the UC Irvine lab, microbial biomass on Sterivex filters (stored at −80 °C freezer) was thawed and extracted using the DNeasy PowerWater Sterivex Kit (Qiagen 14600-50-NF) following the manufacturer recommended protocols. Aliquots of DNA extractions (20 μL/sample, stored in 10 mM Tris) were shipped on dry ice to Molecular Research Lab (Shallowater, TX) for microbial diversity analysis using 16S rRNA gene V4 variable region. The sequencing was performed on an Ion Torrent PGM platform. Sequence data are available from NCBI’s Sequence Read Archive under Bioproject PRJNA554326.
